      140k miles and going strong

      by 2016 Mazda CX9 on 9/2/2026 9:49:32 PM

I bought my 2016 Mazda CX-9 Signature new back in 2016 when we were having our second child, and it now has roughly 140,000 miles on it. Overall, it’s been a great family vehicle. I’ve done most of the routine maintenance myself, including oil changes, tire rotations and brakes, and overall the CX-9 has been pretty easy to work on. At 100,000 miles I replaced the spark plugs, although honestly the old plugs still looked good and probably could have gone longer. I also had the transmission fluid and coolant flushed around that time. The rear brakes can be a little finicky because of the electronic parking brake mechanism, which needs to be put into the proper service/release mode before working on them. Once you know that, though, they’re pretty straightforward. Around 100,000 miles, the radiator developed a leak, so I had it replaced. Then at roughly 120,000 miles I noticed a few small drops of coolant coming from the back of the engine. Nothing major, but I took it to the Mazda dealership to have it checked out. It turned out to be a cylinder head issue that Mazda had issued a TSB for. The repair would normally have been around $4,000, but Mazda covered most of it and I only paid about $1,000. Considering the vehicle already had 120,000 miles on it, I thought Mazda handled the situation very well. Tire life has been excellent. The original tires lasted until around 60,000 miles. I replaced them with a set of Michelins, and those are still on the vehicle at 140,000 miles, meaning I’ve already gotten roughly 80,000 miles out of them. Other than that, there really hasn’t been much to complain about. At this point it mostly has the normal dings, dents and scratches you’d expect from a family vehicle that’s been driven for 10 years and 140,000 miles. The interior and exterior have held up remarkably well, and I still think the styling has aged extremely well for a vehicle that came out in 2016. It doesn’t look or feel like a 10-year-old design. As a family vehicle, it’s been fantastic. It’s comfortable, drives much better than most three-row SUVs, has been dependable overall, and I especially enjoy the adaptive cruise control on longer drives. After owning it since new and putting 140,000 miles on it, I’d absolutely consider buying another Mazda. The CX-9 has been a lovely family car and has served us extremely well.

      Good, Not Great...

by JJJJ on 12/4/2025 12:30:45 PM

After 50k+ miles I decided to write a review of this machine...Would I buy it again, most likely not. However, and here we go. it's a beautiful CUV and when it was made in 2021 many of the standard options were upgrades in higher end Japanese autos as well as many German and European models. The motor is subpar for the size, it needs a bi-turbo system or 2 more cylinders. And while we're at it, 2 more gears...all models are limited to the same engine/trans package only caveat is the AWD/FWD and wheel size between models (18 vs 20). Fuel mileage is awful, mixed driving is on or about 19.5 mpg and may see a "true" 23 mpg on the highway with a perfect temp, flat, no load on HVAC and a small tail wind. Rear storage is smaller than the first Cessna 152 I flew...small bags with no hard sides, and the ability to be smashed together. The 40k sparkplug change is asinine in this day and age...especially if you cannot do them yourself; mid-atlantic dealers charge $500 for 4 spark plugs - takes about 10 minutes total. In the 20" wheel, tires are expensive and they do not wear well - expect 30-35k out of ANY set Now, driving it and what the machine will do is remarkable...it inspires confidence and is the greatest automobile I've ever had for interstate/highway driving. However, the engine issues are a show stopper for most people, it's not IF the head cracks - it is when and Mazda will not support you with exception of stating that it takes 2-3 weeks for an engine and another week to install it all for $9k plus tax and the kick in your stomach! I paid cash for mine in November 2021 @ $46k OTD...no accidents, it gets waxed quarterly and drives as nice as the day it was new. Surprisingly it's worth $20.5k trade-in and about 10% more on private sale. Just under 60% depreciation in under 4 years... So, maybe for you - maybe not...just don't buy a CX-90, it's ugly as well as overpriced...go buy a Toyota!

Love the 2022 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring!

by Kevin on 4/15/2025 12:58:31 PM

Bought this used from a dealer as a certified used car from a lease turn in. Great condition and low miles for the year. Runs great and I love the way it handles. The trunk space is a little small if using the third row seating, but that’s to be expected.
