Reliable for the 18 years we got out of the car...
by Sabz on 12/30/2025 3:27:53 AM
My grandfather owned the 2008 Buick Lucerne CXL I currently drive. I inherited the car at 35,000 miles after he owned it for the first 11 years. It was originally used as a quick commuter car that stayed within the city where he lived. From 2017 to 2026, I put the other 66,000 miles on the car, taking it from NorCal to SoCal on multiple road trips, working in various places throughout the Bay Area, and anywhere and everywhere in between. The car is a great starter for someone who wants to learn to drive a wider and longer car than a typical compact sedan. Great trunk space, roomy back seats, and overall a comfortable ride to be in. The keys are also programmed to change the driver's seat depending on which key unlocks the car, ideal for two people who own and drive the same car. I could get from the Bay Area to North County San Diego on a single tank. The belts were always replaced pretty frequently, as well as the motor mounts (could be user error or just the car itself). The big problems started to arise after the 78,000-mile mark. Please note that the timing cap for the car's cooling system WILL FAIL at some point. It is very common for this car to have this happen, so let your repair shop know once you notice that coolant is leaking!!! You are going to need to account for replacing the entire cooling system to make it worthwhile if you plan on keeping the car long-term. Because I took this car on so many long-distance road trips around the 60,000-mile mark, I felt like everything started to fail one after the other relatively quickly, but it's what comes with having an older car. All-in-all, I do not recommend this as a road trip car as I've learned the hard way... it just eats the car's lifespan up quicker than you'd hope. Other than that, it's a great car to have for commuting and casual driving. - 5.0

I bought a 2009 Buick Lucerne in 2012. I have had not one bit of trouble with it and the only thing I do is fill it with gas and have it washed. - 4.0
Grew to love this car
by Amanda on 7/13/2023 4:04:17 PM
I had an 06 Lucerne for just over 7 years and I loved everything about it. It's comfortable, reliable, and a great family car. I'm a soccer mom and spent a lot of time sitting at practices, reading or just relaxing. It's super roomy, and my CXL had just the right amount of oomph in the engine to go when I needed it to. I did have to have the transmission rebuilt, but haven't had any problems with it since. I would highly recommend this car to anyone who doesn't mind driving something bigger. (My husband always said it felt like he was driving a tank or a boat when behind the wheel.) The only reason I'm not driving it now is because of a traffic accident last week. I would happily have kept this car until it didn't run anymore!
